Course Description

Professional level strategies to manage interactions and crisis situations at home and in the community. This comprehensive program provides a range of modules that equip the learner to manage their own behaviour and assist individuals to promote everyone’s safety. Mandt is an internationally accredited and approved program that meets the accreditation standards for the Alberta Council of Disability Services (Creating Excellence Together) and Alberta Disability Services. Relational Skills - 2 Modules Primary Prevention: Building and Maintaining Healthy Relationships. We will learn about the requirements of healthy relationships and discuss how to use tha tinformation to build and maintain healthy relationships with our coworkers and the people we serve. De-Escalation Skills: Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation. When situations change or is not what was expected, people may become frustrated or unhappy. Sometimes a person may become physically unsafe to themselves or others. At these times we need to use de-escalation skills. Beforewe can de-escalate others, we need to de-escalate ourselves. We will learn self-regulation skills for ourselves, as well as how to support others with co-regulation. Conceptional Skills - 2 Modules Trauma Informed Care: Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is an approach that recognizes how trauma —past or present—can impact the emotional, physical, and psychological well-being of IAS (Individuals Accessing Services). It emphasizes creating environments that are safe, respectful, predictable, and empowering. Supports are encouraged to shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What has happened to you?” By building trust, offering choices, fostering collaboration, and avoiding re-traumatization, we support both healing and inclusion for people with disabilities. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS): Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive, person-centered approach to support IAS in developing positive, functional behaviours. Rather than focusing on punishment or controlling IAS, PBIS emphasizes understanding the purpose behind behaviours, teaching new skills, and creating supportive environments. This workshop is offered through In-Person Training.
